Anathema - Weather Systems (2012): Get some Dramamine… Or hemlock?

Very reputable in specialized sites. International reviews speaking wonders and extremely favorable feedback from fans. What could go wrong when listening to Weather Systems, the latest Anathema’s work?

Excuse me, but... Everything goes wrong! And man, I really tried. I’ve tried the album over and over again, but the only feeling that it caused on me was nausea and vomiting. Okay, I wasn’t expecting something shaken, heavy, or full of energy. I knew that I was going to face with something more Zen.
However, Weather Systems abuses. The whole album is excessively mellow, too slow and repetitive. When it starts shaking a little, turns to an Electro-Pop

Seriously, it looks like the soundtrack of a Disney’s romantic cartoon, or some vegetarian vampires’ movie (those made for teens which felt in platonic love by older boys). If you think I’m pushing too hard and you liked the album, sorry again. But is impossible to swallow a disc with lyrics like “my love will never die”, “my feelings will always shine” and “love is the life breath”… To say that this is a deep album is the same as say Twilight is a wonderful love story.

Stan after listening to Weather Systems.

The disc production is good. And that’s all. You can’t save anything else. All songs have similar structure and are absurdly repetitive. You feel like running inside an infinite loop next to an apprentice drummer who only knows the same Pop sequence.

When you face a breath of hope, as the great introduction of The Storm Before the Calm, the music extends by unnecessary 9 minutes, long enough to wrap the stomach again.

If you want to know Weather Systems, do it at your own risk. I strongly recommend that, for prevention, drink some Dramamine before¹. With luck, you will sleep soon enough.
And caution! Looking for the album cover will make you feel worse. It’ll give you an insatiable desire to take a gulp of hemlock².

¹ - Medication for nausea.
² - Poison ingested by Socrates.

“It's getting colder, I'm getting colder, colder, it's getting colder; Let it get colder until I can't feel anything at all.”
